I did not see this coming.

The President’s party always loses the midterms. There were only two years when it didn’t happen — in 2002 after 9/11, and in 1998, when Republicans spent the entire year trying to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about his sex life.

And to paraphrase the Daily Beast, we still don’t know who won the midterms. But Republicans definitely lost.

Yesterday is a strong signal nothing GOP has been doing is working.

Even in this best case scenario — gerrymandering, the midterm advantage, widespread voter suppression and intimidation, terrible unvetted Democratic nominees — they couldn’t sell the low-key authoritarianism of modern day Republicanism to ordinary, good-hearted Americans.

Roe/Dobbs

GOP tried to frame the abortion discussion around religious propaganda, birth control, and women’s sexuality.

It was really about expectant mothers dying on operating tables because their doctors couldn’t save them without risking life in prison.

Not to mention the grotesque sideshows of revictimizing pre-teen rape victims or insisting…
