Minnesota: The Most Important Swing State

Minnesota has emerged as the most important swing state in the country and yes, it is a swing state. We’ve talked about how Senator Tina Smith is vulnerable, and the Democrat in CD-07 is fighting for his political life. Things went from bad to worse when one of Congresswoman Angie Craig’s (MN-02) opponents died this week.

A quick refresher: When Senator Wellstone was killed in a plane crash two weeks before the election in 2002, the DFL replaced him with Walter Mondale. He lost. Minnesota passed a law saying if a candidate dies right before an election, the election is postponed. Craig will have to vacate her seat and run in a special election on February 9, 2021. She was already vulnerable, and now it will be a lot harder — and a lot more expensive — for her to win it back again.

Minnesota-07 is R-12 and Trump won there by 31 points, but the incumbent Democrat has managed to hold that seat for 15 terms. He’s one of those conservative Blue Dogs everyone loves to hate, but what do I always say,

“A Democrat is always better and the best Democrat is one who can win.”

It is absolutely critical for Democrats to hold onto that seat, because he could be the deciding vote in the Presidential election if it gets kicked to the House. Each state would get one vote, determined by the majority of the Congressional delegation.

With CD-02 vacant, the best we can hope for is a tie and a coin flip.
